Question

How do you acidify potassium manganate?

Open in App
Solution

  1. In titration reactions diluted sulphuric acid is used.
  2. Nitric acid is not used as an oxidising agent as hydrochloric acid reacts with KMnO4 and forms chlorine.
  3. Chlorine is also an aqueous solution as well as oxidising agent.
  4. Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is a permanganic acid salt (HMnO4) and manganate is a manganic acid salt (K2MnO4)(H2MnO4).
  5. Oxidation state of manganese is VI in the manganate salt and VII in the permanganate.
