Fluorine is the most electrophilic element and the lowest electrophilic element is Iodine. Fluorination is extremely reactive, and for electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions iodination is highly unreactive. The exothermic amounts of aromatic halogenation have decreased from fluorine to iodine.
Benzene reacts with chlorine or bromine in presence of a catalyst at room temperature by replacing one of the hydrogen atoms in the benzene ring with a chlorine or bromine molecule.
Aluminium chloride bromine, aluminium bromide or iron acts as a catalyst.
