How does Hardy-Weinberg show evolution?

Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium:

  1. This principle states that when there are no disturbing factors present, then there will be a constant genetic variation from one generation to the next.
  2. In case of no evolutionary changes or influences, the allelic or genetic frequency will remain constant, generation after generation.
  3. It states that in a gene pool the sum of all the allelic frequencies is 1.
  4. According to this principle, if the measured frequencies come out different from the expected frequencies then it depicts certain evolutionary changes.

Formula showing Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium:

p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1

where, p2 = frequency of dominant homozygous allele (AA)

2pq = frequency of heterozygous allele (Aa)

q2 = frequency of recessive homozygous allele (aa)
