Question

How is gradient calculated?

Solution

Definition of gradient :

The gradient is simply defined as rise/run, i.e. the vertically traveled distance divided by the horizontally traveled distance. If we want a percentage of that number, then we multiply it by 100. A positive slope means that two factors are strongly related, i.e., yalso reduce as xincreases, and when xdecreases. Graphically, a desirable slope means that the line increases as a line on the line graph travel from left to right.

The gradient is a vector operation that acts on a scalar function to create a vector whose magnitude at the point of the gradient is the maximum rate of change in the function and which is pointed in the direction of that maximum rate of change. The gradient’s divergence is called the LaPlacian.

For example, We want to work out the gradient of a ramp that has a run of 10meter and a rise of 2meter.

Gradient = Run / Rise

Gradient = 102=5.
