Question

How many banana bonds are there in Diborane?

Open in App
Solution

The number of Banana bond present in Diborane:

  • The structure of Diborane(B2H6) is formed by banana bonding. They are highly flammable, toxic and exothermic in nature.
  • The electronic configuration of B is 1s22s22p1 indicates the atomic number is 5. In exited state, one of the 1s22s22p1valence electron 2s get excited to 2pand form sp3 hybridized orbitals. There are four hybrid orbitals one is empty and one has 3e-.
  • The B atom in B2H6 has two covalent bond. Thus, 2B forms 4 covalent bond. Now, two B left with one empty orbital and one unpaired electron in each B atom. The bridge is formed between B-H-B. These bonds are known as Banana bonds with the involvement of three atoms and one electron from Hydrogen and other from Boron, two electrons. A system of 3 atoms and 2 electron is formed.

Thus, Diborane consist of two banana bonds.
