Every shell can occupies a specific number of electrons.

To determine the number of electrons, the general formula:

2n2 where n is the shell number

For n=1 , the shell holds 2e- i.e. the first shell,

For n=2 , the shell holds 8e- i.e. the second shell,

For n=3, the shell holds 18e- i.e third shell and so on.
