How many optically active stereoisomers are possible for butane-2,3-diol?

Butane-2,3-diol:
CH3CH(OH)CH(OH)CH3 has two chiral centers with same groups at the terminals.
Therefore, the compound will have 3 stereoisomers in which one has plane of symmetry and becomes optically inactive. The other two isomers are non-superimposable mirror images called enantiomers which are optically active.
Hence, number of optically active stereoisomers are 2.
