How does sperm formation take place?

Open in App
Solution

Sperm formation:

  1. Spermatogenesis is the formation of sperm within the testes.

Spermatocytogenesis:

  1. The diploid spermatogonium cells present in the seminiferous tubules undergo mitotic division to form two diploid primary spermatocytes.
  2. These cells move down the seminiferous tubule and undergo meiosis I to form haploid secondary spermatocytes.

Spermatogenesis:

  1. The secondary spermatocytes enter meiosis II and divide to form haploid spermatids.

Spermiogenesis:

  1. The spermatids begin to develop a tail and basal body.
  2. Maturation of these cells occurs under the influence of testosterone and the mature spermatozoa are released.
  3. The mature sperm cells are released from the Sertoli cells into the seminiferous tubule lumen and this is referred to as spermiation.
  4. The entire process of spermatogenesis takes around 64 days to form mature sperms.
