How to convert phenol to anisole?

Open in App
Solution

Conversion of Phenol to Anisole:-

Step 1: Formation of Phenoxide ion

When Phenol is treated with Sodium hydroxide(NaOH), it forms Phenoxde ion:

Step 2: Formation of Anisole

The Phenoxide ion formed is now reacted with Methyl bromide(CH3Br) to form the Anisole:

This conversion of Phenol to Anisole is a 2 step reaction.

Therefore, Phenol when treated with Sodium hydroxide followed by a reaction with Methyl bromide forms Anisole.
