I read 4/9 of a book on one day and 3/5 of the remaining next day.If 100 pages of the book where still left unread, how many pages did the book contain

Open in App
Solution

Let the book contains x number of pages.
Number of pages read on first day =49x
Number of pages that remain unread after first day =x-49x=1-49x=59x
As the number of pages read on the second day is 35 of the remaining pages after first day.
Therefore number of pages read on second day =35×59x=13x
Total number of pages read = (number of pages read on first day + number of pages read on second day)
=49x+13x=49+13x=79x
Number of pages remaining unread after second day =x-79x=29x=100 ............ GivenTherefore, 29x=100x=100×92=450.Hence total number of pages in the book is 450.
