Question

If xy=3 and xy=10, then find x4+y4.

Open in App
Solution

We have,

xy=3......(1)

xy=10......(2)

By equation (2) and we get,

y=10x

Then, put the value of y in equation (1) and we get,

x10x=3

x210=3x

x23x10=0

x2(52)x10=0

x25x+2x10=0

x(x5)+2(x5)=0

(x5)(x+2)=0

If x5=0 then,x=5

If x+2=0 then,x=2

Put the value of x in equation (2) and we get,

y=105=2

y=102=5

Value of x4+y4

=(5)4+(2)2

=625+16

=641

Hence, this is the answer.
