Question

In an experiment, a flower from the pea plant (pure line) that produces constricted pods was emasculated and bagged. Meanwhile, pollen from another pea plant (pure line) that produces inflated pods was collected and dusted on the stigma of the emasculated flower. The flower, after pollination, was rebagged.
Assuming that the plants were otherwise similar in all other characters, predict the phenotype of the offspring of the F1 generation.

Solution

The correct option is A Inflated pod shape
Considering the character of pod shape in pea plants, inflated pod shape is a dominant trait whereas constricted pod shape is a recessive trait.

According to the question, the flower of the pea plant producing constricted pods was emasculated. Emasculation is removal of anthers from the flower. So this plant with emasculated flower is considered as female parent.
As pollen from the plant bearing inflated pods is dusted on the stigma of emasculated flower, it is considered as male parent.

So, the female parent contributed to the constricted allele of pod shape while the male parent contributed to the inflated allele of pod shape.

Allele for inflated pod shape is I and constricted pod shape is i.

Hence, from the above cross it is evident that all the offspring in F1 generation will produce inflated pods.
