Stratified squamous epithelium

Stratified squamous epithelium is made up of multiple layers of cells. The innermost layer resting on the basement membrane is cuboidal while the outer or superficial layer is formed of flattened squamous epithelial cells. The transitional layers in between are made up of polygonal cells with round nuclei.

Stratified squamous epithelium

Stratified squamous epithelium present on the epidermis of the skin is keratinised and has keratin protein deposition for waterproofing and toughening the skin. In this case, the cells on the superficial layers die and lose their nuclei and the insoluble keratin in their cytoplasm forms a non living covering over the epithelium.
