Robert A. Millikan and Harvey Fletcher set up the oil-drop experiment to determine the magnitude of the charge on the oil droplet. The set-up for the experiment is shown below-
In the below figure, an oil drop is seen in the uniform electric field between the metallic plates. Millikan calculated the charge for many drops and found that the charge on every drop is always equal to the integral multiple of the charge on an electron e(about ).
