Question

A stone of mass 20 g is projected from a rubber catapult of length 0.1 m and area of cross section 106 m2 stretched by an amount 0.04 m. The velocity of the projected stone is ____ m/s.

Solution

By energy conservation, elastic potential energy gets converted into kinetic energy.

12Kx2=12mv2

12YAL(ΔL)2=12mv2

where, K=YAL ; ΔL=x

0.5×109×106×(0.04)20.1=201000v2

v2=400

v=20 m/s
