Question

An electric dipole is placed on xaxis in proximity to a line charge of linear charge density 3.0×106 C/m. Line charge is placed on zaxis and positive and negative charge of dipole is at a distance of 10 mm and 12 mm from the origin respectively. If total force of 4 N is exerted on the dipole, find out the amount of positive or negative charge of the dipole.

Solution

The correct option is D 4.44 μC

r=10 mm, x=2 mm

Now forces on the charge,

|Fq|=2kλrq

|Fq|=2kλr+xq

|Fnet|=2kλqr2kλqr+x

|Fnet|=2kλq.xr(r+x)

4=2×9×109×3×106×q×(2×103)(10×103)×(12×103)

q=4.44×106 C=4.44 μC

Hence, (D) is the correct answer.
