Solution

Rain gauge:

  1. A rain gauge is a meteorological instrument to measure the precipitating rain in a given amount of time per unit area.
  2. It can also be called an udometer or an ombrometer.
  3. The instrument consists of a collection container that is placed in an open area.
  4. These gauges work by collecting the falling rain in a funnel-shaped collector which is attached to a measuring tube.
  5. The area of the collector is ten times that of the tube.
  6. Thus, the rain gauge will work by magnifying the liquid by a factor of ten.
  7. The standard rain gauge for the measurement of rainfall is the 203mm8inch rain gauge.
  8. This is a circular funnel with a diameter of 203mm which collects the rain into a calibrated cylinder.
  9. The measuring cylinder can record up to 25mm of precipitation.

Thus, the rain gauge is the instrument used to measure the rainfall at a place.
