Question

Name the reagent used in the following reaction Butan-2-one to Butan-2-ol

Open in App
Solution

Reduction of Ketone:

  • It is the process of adding hydrogen to a molecule or removing electronegative atoms like halogen or oxygen.
  • Lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH4) or sodium borohydride (NaBH4) is used for the conversion of aldehydes and ketones to alcohol.
  • As a result, H2 are net added across theC=O bond.
  • Because hydride is not polarizable, it is not a suitable nucleophile by itself. However, sodium borohydride serves as a carrier for nucleophilic hydride anion. In addition, the solvent serves as a proton source.
  • The intermediate formed by initially transferring the hydride ion can attack three additional carbonyl substrates until all of the hydride atoms in the original reagent have been completely.
  • The reagent gives hydride to the carbonyl carbon in this medium, while the solvent protonates the carbonyl oxygen
  • To liberate the alcohol from the complex ion, the product is treated with dilute acid (such as dilute sulfuric acid or dilute hydrochloric acid).
  • Reaction for converting Butan-2-one to Butan-2-ol is shown as

Therefore, LiAlH4 Lithium aluminum hydride or NaBH4 Sodium borohydride is used for converting Butan-2-one to Butan-2-ol.
