O3, N2O, NO2, SO2, CO2, SnCl2, Cl2O, HCN, +NO2
Among the following if the number of linear molecules are x and the number of angular molecules are y. Then the value of xy would be

Open in App
Solution

We know generally linear molecules have sp hybridisation.

In O3 the central O atom is sp2 hybridised and it is angular in shape.
In N2O the central N atom is sp hybridised and linear in shape.
In NO2 the central N atom is sp2 hybridised and angular in shape.
In SO2 the central S atom is sp2 hybridised and angular in shape.
In CO2 the central C atom is sp hybridised and linear in shape.
In SnCl2 the central Sn atom is sp2 hybridised with one lone pair and hence, angular in shape.
In Cl2O the central O atom is sp3 hybridised with two lone pair and angular in shape.
In HCN the central atom C is sp hybridised and linear in shape
In +NO2 the central atom +N is sp hybridised and linear in shape
Hence y=5, x=4
Hence, x = 4 and y = 5 so xy=45=0.8
