Question

Out of H2O and H2S Which one has a higher bond angle and why?

Open in App
Solution

Bond angle based on electronegativity of oxygen and sulphur

Bond angle in H2O is more because oxygen is more electronegative than Sulphur.

As compared to H2S the O atom is more electronegative in H2O than S in H2S.

This high electronegativity of Oxygen attracts the bond pair electrons towards itself much closer than in case of H2S.

Thus, electrons of O-H bond come closer and experience maximum repulsion due to which these bonds tend to go away from each other as much as possible.

But in H2S, electronegativity of S atom is much less and H-S bond electrons do not come much closer and not suffer much repulsion and hence bond angle is less for H2S in comparison to H2O.
