Question

Oxygen is Slightly ________ Than Air Hence It is Collected By the _________ Displacement of Water

Solution

Downward displacement of water :

  • Downward displacement of water is known as the method used for an immiscible liquid/gas, which helps in collecting them above the surface of the water i.e. by displacing water downward.
  • This is a method mostly used for various collecting gases like Oxygen, Hydrogen, etc which are mostly insoluble or slightly soluble in water.

Collection of Oxygen:

  • Oxygen gas can be generally collected by the downward displacement of water as it has slight solubility in water and also is slightly heavier than that of air.
  • Therefore, Oxygen can be easily collected over water without the fear of excessive dilution.
  • Whereas the oxygen gas cannot be collected with the help of downward displacement of air due to the reason that Oxygen is known to be slightly heavier than air and also gets mixed with other gases in the air.

Hence, Oxygen is Slightly heavier than air hence it is collected by the downward Displacement of Water.
