Solution

The correct option is C

Condensation and elimination

The correct answer is option C.

Explanation of correct answer :-

  • Bakelite is a condense polymer of Phenol and Formaldehyde.
  • When Phenol is made to react with Formaldehyde in the presence of excess dilute acid or alkali, it gives a resin called Bakelite.
  • Formation of Bakelite follows two steps.

Step 1 :- Formation of o-Hydroxy methyl phenol

  • In the first step, Formaldehyde reacts with Phenol in the presence of alkali or acid to give o-Hydroxy methyl phenol (Polymer).
  • Formaldehyde attached to the ortho-position of the phenol ring.

Step 2 :- Formation of Bakelite by condensation.

  • In second step, o-Hydroxy methyl phenol condense together to form a resin called Bakelite.
  • Bakelite is condense polymer formed through linkage of o-Hydroxy methyl phenol.
