Question

Show the polarisation of carbon-magnesium bond in the following structure.

CH3CH2CH2CH2MgX

Open in App
Solution

Carbon is more electronegative than magnesium. The electronegativity difference of C and Mg is 1.24. Due to this electronegativity difference, the CMg bonds are polarised.

The CMg bond pair electrons are more attracted towards carbon. So, C attains partial negative charge and Mg attains partial positive charge.
