Question

State Henry's law and mention some imp applications!

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,Henry's law states that the solubility of a gas in a liquid is directly proportional to the pressure of the gas. Further mole fraction of the gas in a solution is proportional to the partial pressure of the gas. Partial pressure of the gas in solution = KH x mole fraction of gas in solution, where KH is Henry's law constant. (i) To increase the solubility of CO2 in soft drinks and soda water, the bottle is sealed under high pressure. (ii) At high altitudes, the partial pressure of oxygen is less than that at the ground level because the atmospheric pressure is less. Low blood oxygen causes anoxia. (iii) To avoid bends (painful effects during the decompression of scuba divers), oxygen diluted with less soluble helium gas is used by the sea divers.
