Question

Sulphuric acid is manufactured by a contact process.
(b) Give the conditions for the oxidation of SO2

Open in App
Solution

Conditions for the oxidation of SO2 :
  • A suitable catalyst: is required for oxidation like vanadium pentoxide V2O5 or platinum(Pt).
  • Exothermic reactions are favoured at low temperature: thus, temperature should be as low as possible and maximum yield is found to be at 410- 4500C.
  • High pressure: is required because it favours the reaction because the product formed has less volume than the reactant.
  • Excess oxygen: is required as this increases production of sulphur trioxide SO3.
