Histones are proteins associated with the DNA molecule. They help package the DNA into structural units called as nucleosomes, which are the chief component of chromatin. Each nucleosome consists of a protein core and the DNA is wrapped around it. The protein core is made of a histone octamer of two copies each of the histone proteins H2A, H2B, H3 and H4. H1 is present outside the nucleosome. Its function is to keep the DNA in place.
When replication or transcription is happening, the chromosome needs to decondense and the DNA needs to unwind, so the H1 is removed.
