Question

The calculated spin-only magnetic moment of Cr2+ is

Open in App
Solution

Spin only magnetic moment:

When an electron moves freely it generates a magnetic field, this magnetic field generated by the motion of electrons is known as the magnetic moment. When the electron rotates on its own axis generating a magnetic field it is known as a spin-only magnetic moment.

Formula to calculate spin only magnetic moment:

μ=4s(s+1) where s= Spin magnetic moment.

μ=n(n+2) where n= Number of unpaired electrons.

The spin-only magnetic moment of the Cr2+ ion:

Step-1: Electronic configuration of the Cr2+ ion is [Ar]4s03d4

Step-2: Number of unpaired electrons (n) = 4

Step-3: Calculating the spin-only magnetic moment

n(n+2)=4(4+2)=4.89BM
