Question

The figure shows two crops fields(plot A and B) have been treated by manures and chemical fertilizers, respectively, keeping other environmental factors the same. Observe the graph and answer the following questions.

  1. Why does plot B show a sudden and gradual decrease in yield?
  2. Why is the highest peak in plat A graph slightly delayed?
  3. What is the reason for the different patterns of the two graphs?

Solution

Manures:

Manures are defined as waste from plants and animals used as sources of nutrients for plants.

Chemical fertilizers:

Chemical fertilizers are defined as any number of artificial compound substances made particularly to increase crop yield.

1. Plot B shows a sudden and gradual decrease in yield:

  1. Due to the sudden increase, the chemical fertilizer supplies the minerals immediately in quantity.
  2. The gradual decrease is due to the depletion of nutrients caused by absorption through plants.

2. The highest peak in plat A graph is slightly delayed:

  1. The delay in plot A decays slowly, so the release of minerals is also delayed.
  2. Manures take time to mix up with the soil and form crumbs that increase water holding.

3. The different patterns of the two graphs:

  1. The difference in the two graphs shows that the use of manure is more beneficial than that of chemical fertilizer.
