Methyl isocyanate (MIC) is an intermediate chemical in the production of carbamate pesticides. The Bhopal gas tragedy was due to the MIC leak on the night of 2–3 December 1984 at the UCIL (Union Carbide India Limited). At least 30 tons of methyl isocyanate gas was leaked which killed more than 15,000 people and affected over 600,000 workers. Bhopal gas tragedy is known as world's worst industrial disaster.
