(i) Write the functions of placenta, amnion and umbilical cord.

Solution

  • Placenta: allows diffusion of substances from the mother to the foetus and from the foetus to the mother. It also produces female hormones like oestrogen and progesterone, similar to endocrine glands.
  • Amnion: it contains a transparent fluid in which the embryo is suspended, thus providing a cushion against mechanical injury. It also provides protection against fluid loss from the embryo itself and against tissue adhesions.
  • Umbilical cord: it consists of blood vessels and connects the placenta with the foetus, thus facilitating the transfer of materials between the mother and the foetus.
