Question

Value of the universal gas constant R is the same for all gases. What is its physical significance?

Open in App
Solution

The universal gas constant: R=PVnT

Its unit is obtained from expression,

R=Pressure volumeno.of moles temperature

Pressure =forcearea=forcelength2=force.length2

Volume =length3

So,

R=force.length2×length3no.of moles×kelvin

R=force×lengthno.of moles×kelvin

Thus, the unit of R is work per mole per Kelvin (work=force×length).

Hence, R is the amount of Work done per mole per Kelvin.
