Monsoon winds are a type of land and sea breeze, but on a larger scale.
- In summer, lands warm up faster than the water of the oceans.
- Due to this the air above the land gets warmer than the air over the water causing the wind to flow from the oceans towards the land.
- These winds carry moisture and are known as the monsoon winds.
- In summers in India, monsoon winds generate from the southwest region and carry water from the Indian Ocean.
- In winters in India, the direction of the wind gets reversed and it flows from the colder land in the northwest region, to the oceans. These winds in winters do not carry much water and hence, bring only little amounts of rain.
