Ecological pyramids:

  1. The basis of an ecological pyramid is biomass, energy, and number.
  2. An ecological pyramid is a graphical representation of the relationship between the different living organisms at different trophic levels.
  3. Depending on the factors, there are three types of ecological pyramids: Pyramid of number, Pyramid of biomass and Pyramid of energy.

Types of ecological pyramids:

Pyramid of number:

  1. In the ecological pyramid of number, the number of organisms in each tropic level is considered as one level in the pyramid.
  2. The pyramid of number is upright except for detritus food chain.

Pyramid of biomass:

  1. In the ecological pyramid of biomass, each level considers the amount of biomass produced at each tropic level.
  2. The pyramid of biomass is upright except for oceans.

Pyramid of energy:

  1. The ecological pyramid of energy is always upright.
  2. This is because the loss of energy is unidirectional.
