Tonsils:

  1. Tonsils are the masses of lymphoid tissues implanted in the mucous membranes of the pharynx.
  2. It is covered by epithelium, with crypts.
  3. These crypts typically have bacteria, food debris, and dead WBCs.

There are three main sets of tonsils:

  1. Pharyngeal tonsils: Present on the walls of the pharynx behind the nasal cavity.
  2. Lingual tonsils: Present on each side of the root of the tongue.
  3. Palatine tonsil: Present at the posted margin of the oral cavity.
  4. Tubal tonsil: is located posterior to the opening of the Eustachian tube on the lateral wall of the nasopharynx.
