Question

What gives rise pressure to on the gas?

Open in App
Solution

Understanding the concept:

  • Pressure is defined as the amount of force applied over a unit area per unit of time
  • Mathematically, P=F/A
  • The force upon the area equals the pressure.
  • There are two ways to increase pressure using the equation:
  • increase the rate of force applied or reduce the surface over which it has been applied.

In this case, generally, the Ideal Gas Law came into place:

  • Real gases act like ideal gases at low (normal) pressures, thus you may use the Gas Laws to figure out how to raise a system's pressure.
  • The Ideal Gas Law states; that P = nRT/V
  • Where P denotes pressure, V denotes volume, n denotes the number of moles in a gas, R denotes Boltzmann's constant value, and T denotes temperature.
  • If you solve for P, we get:
  • P = (nRT)/V

Thus there are three ways to increase the pressure of gas;

  • Increase the temperature of the gas. This is represented by the “T”.
  • Increase the amount of gas. This is represented by the “n”.
  • Decrease the volume of the gas. This is the "V" in the equation.
