Question

What happens if the G is positive ?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Gibbs energy is a quantity applied to measure the maximum amount of work performed in a thermodynamic system at constant temperature and pressure.
  2. It is given by:
    G=H-TS
    Gis the Gibbs free energy.
    S is the Entropy of the system.
    His the Enthalpy, and T is the temperature.
  3. If G is positive that means the backward reaction is favoured.
  4. G can be positive only when S is negative and H is positive.
  5. If G is positive that means the reaction will be non-spontaeous.
  6. Hence, it will not favour the forward reaction.
