Question

What happens in over modulation?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Modulation is the process of combining information with the carrier signal by varying any of the characteristics of the original wave.
  2. Over modulation is a condition when the modulated signal is made defective.
  3. Regardless of the audio frequency, overmodulation causes the waveform or envelope of the transmitted signal to have sharp edges or bends.
  4. According to the diagram we can see that due to overmodulation, the waves bend more than the carrier wave.
  5. A defect in modulation can lead to sharp edges or bends in the waveform of the transmitted signal
  6. A defective modulation leads to false emission of modulated carrier signals and defected modulated signal
  7. An AM wave can be said to be over-modulated depending upon the modulation index μ
  8. For an over-modulated signal, the modulation index is μ>1.
