Question

What happens when white light passes through a glass prism?

Open in App
Solution

Dispersion:

  1. Dispersion is the breaking of white light itself into the constituent colours as it passes through a prism.
  2. The spectrum is the band of seven colours that are generated.

When white light passes through a glass prism:

  1. Whenever white light travels through a prism, its constituent colours bend at various degrees.
  2. Red has the longest wavelength and bends the least, although violet bends the most.
  3. Consequently, in the generated spectrum, a red light would be at the peak, violet would be at the bottom, and the remainder of hues or colours are in between.

Therefore, when white light passes through a glass prism the light gets dispersed and there is a formation of a seven colours spectrum.
