Fetal membrane:

  1. The fetal membranes are associated with the developing fetus. Two membranes play an important role in protection and support of fetus.
  2. They are amnion and chorion.

Amnion:

  1. From the first few weeks of development, the embryo encloses by a fluid-filled sac whose inner membrane is called the amnion.
  2. The fluid-filled in the sac is called amniotic fluid.

Functions:

  1. The amnion contains a thin transparent fluid called amniotic fluid in which the embryo is suspended.
  2. It acts as a cushion and protects the fetus from any mechanical jerks.
  3. It maintains even pressure and protects the fetus from damage.
