An atom is defined as the basic building block of a substance. It is the smallest unit of matter but later on it is found that the atom is further divided into electron, proton, and neutron.
The atoms are very small that they can not be seen through naked eyes. An electron microscope is needed to watch an atom. The diameter of an atom is in the range of 0.1nm to 0.5nm
