Solution

Step 1: Buoyant force :

  1. When some object is placed in a liquid, it experiences an upward force or upthrust which tends to lift the immersed body to the surface.
  2. The body therefore appears lighter by an amount equal to the upthrust of the liquid.
  3. The upward force exerted by a liquid on object is called buoyant force.

Step 2: The factors on which buoyant force depends are :

  1. Density of the liquid.
  2. Acceleration due to gravity.
  3. Volume of the liquid displaced.
  4. Volume of the body submerged in the liquid.
  5. Nature of the material.
