Churning movement:

  3. Stomach-churning is an unpleasant, agitated sensation produced by a number of stomachs and intestinal problems.
  4. A chime occurs when food mixes with the acidic gastric juices in the stomach due to the churning movement of its muscle layers.
  5. This structurally breaks down the food and blends it with the gastric juice, allowing the enzymes to work properly.
  6. The stomach wall has multiple smooth muscle layers for this function: outer longitudinal, middle circular, and inner oblique.
  7. Throughout food churning, the cardiac and pyloric sphincters stay closed.
