Question

What is CT and PT ratio in transformer?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The transformer in the simplest way can be described as a thing that steps up or steps down voltage.
  2. In a step-up transformer, the output voltage is increased and in a step-down transformer, the output voltage is decreased.
  3. The step-up transformer will decrease the output current and the step-down transformer will increase the output current for keeping the input and the output power of the system equal.

Current transformer (CT):

  1. The translation of current from a greater value into a proportionate current to a lower value is accomplished by a current transformer. It converts high voltage current into low voltage current, which enables the ammeter to safely monitor heavy current flows across transmission lines.
  2. A current transformer is abbreviated as CT.
  3. A CT reduces the value of the current to the normal current.
  4. Current transformer ratio is the ratio of primary current input to secondary current output.

Potential transformer (PT):
1. One definition of a potential transformer is an instrument transformer used to change the voltage from a higher value to a lower value. This transformer reduces the voltage to a safe limit value that may be quickly monitored by a voltmeter, wattmeter, watt-hour meter, or another common low voltage instrument.
2. The potential transformer is abbreviated as PT.
3.Potential transformer ratio is the ratio of primary voltage input to secondary output.
