Question

What is K in equilibrium?

Open in App
Solution

  1. 'K' represents the equilibrium constant. It is the ratio of the product of the concentration of products formed to that of the product of the concentration of reactants.
  2. For a given reaction, aA+bBcC+dD, the equilibrium constant can be given as, K=[C]c×[D]d[A]a×[B]b.
  3. When at equilibrium, the value of the equilibrium constant is 1, implying that the rate of forwarding reaction is equal to that of the backward reaction.
  4. It is a dimensionless quantity. The formula for the equilibrium constant does not include any liquids or solids, rather an aqueous solution or gaseous substance is shown in it.
  5. This value is specific to a given temperature for a reaction. The value changes when the temperature at which the reaction is carried out changes.
