Solution
The electrons in an atom orbit around its nucleus in a circular path. This path is an imaginary one and is known as orbits.
Each atom contains n number of shells in which the electrons are able to move freely.
The shells are called KLMN shells. Each of these shells has subshells in them which are known as orbitals.
The first shell is the K-shell which has only one subshell, occupying 2 electrons.
The second shell is the L-shell which contains two subshells (s, p), accommodating 8 electrons in total.
The third subshell, M-shell comprises three subshells (s,p,d), carrying 18 electrons.
N-shell is the fourth shell of an atom which has four subshells (s,p,d,f) having 32 electrons in them.
Thus, these shells also denote the principal quantum number of the orbitals.
