Question

What is limiting friction and its laws?

Open in App
Solution

Definition:

  1. Limiting friction is described as the friction created when two static surfaces come into contact with each other.
  2. The limiting frictional force is independent of the area of contact and is proportional to the reasonable reaction between the contacting surfaces.

Laws of limiting friction:

The list of the laws of limiting friction is as follows:

  1. The orientation of motion and of limiting frictional force has always been opposed.
  2. The limiting friction has been determined by the material, this same type of contacting surfaces, and the surface quality (smoothness) of the areas.
  3. The limiting friction constantly works tangentially towards the two continuous contact surfaces.
  4. The limiting friction, and the normal force seen between two surfaces, are precisely proportional.
  5. The limiting friction is independent of surface form and area.
