Question

What Is Meant By Elasticity?

Open in App
Solution

Elasticity

  1. A property of a body by virtue of which a body tends to regain its original shape or size when external forces are removed is called elasticity.
  2. Most solid materials exhibit elastic behavior.
  3. If an object exceeds its elastic limit the object cannot recover its original size or shape.
  4. Hooke's law for elasticity states that if stressstrain=constantdeformation is small, the stress in a body is proportional to the corresponding strain.
  5. That maximum stress which on removing the deforming force makes the body recover its original state completely.

Graph observation:

  1. Stress is directly proportional to point A called is proportionality limit.
  2. Elastic point is point up to which a body can regain its original configuration.
  3. The point beyond the elastic limit at which the length of the wire starts increasing with increasing stress. It is defined as the yield point.
  4. The strain persists even when the stress is removed. This lagging behind strain is called elastic hysteresis.
  5. The SI unit of modulus of elasticity is Pascal.
