What is meant by saying that metals are :(i) malleable (ii) ductile (iii) lustrous , and (iv) sonorous ?
When we say that metals are malleable and ductile, we refer to their ability to be either made into sheets or drawn into wires. Ductility is the ability of the metal to get stretched without sustaining damage i.e the ability of a metal to be drawn into wires whereas malleability refers to the ability of the metals to get deformed when compressed i.e. the ability of the metal to be drawn into sheets.
This is a property of the metals and when we say that metals are sonorous it means that they create a ringing sound when hit.
Any light incident that falls on the metals results in the light getting reflected back. This is because of the property of electrons present in the metals that vibrate when they come in contact with metals. They thus, create their own light. This reflection causes the metals to appear shiny or lustrous.
