Bond order:

  • “In the Lewis description of covalent bond, the Bond Order is given by the number of bonds between the two atoms in a molecule.”

Step 1: Formula for calculation of bond order:

  • Bond order is half the difference between the number of electrons in the bonding orbital and the number of electrons in non-bonding orbitals.
  • Bondorder=12Nb-Na
  • Where Nb represents the number of electrons in the bonding orbital while Nais the number of electrons in the antibonding orbitals.

Step 2: Calculation of bond order for N2 molecule:

  • Electronic configuration of N2 (14 electrons) = KK'(σ2s)2(σ*2s)2(π2px)2(π2py)2(σ2pz)2
  • The molecular orbital diagram of N2 is given below:

Bondorder=128-2Bondorder=12×6=3

Step 3: Calculation of bond order for O2 molecule:

  • Electronic configuration of O2 (16 electrons) =KK'[σ(2s)]2[σ(2s)]2[σ(1pz)]2[π(2px)]2[π(2py)]2[π(2px)]1[π(2py)]1
  • The molecular orbital diagram of O2 is given below:

Bondorder=128-4Bondorder=12×4=2
