Question

What is mole percent? Give an example

Open in App
Solution

Mole percent:

  • Mole percent (mol%) is the same as mole fraction in chemistry, but in a different guise.
  • Multiplying the mole fraction by 100 yields the mole percentage of the given component.
  • MoleFraction=thenumberofmolesofoneingredientinthegivenmixturethetotalnumberofmolesinthemixture.
  • As a result, Mole percent Equals Mole fraction x 100.
  • Molepercent=thenumberofmolesofoneingredientinthegivenmixturethetotalnumberofmolesinthemixture×100

Example of mole percent:

  • In an aqueous solution containing 25.0g water and 5.0g sodium chloride, finding the mole percentage of sodium chloride

Step 1: Finding the mole fraction of NaCl

  • no. of moles of NaCl =givenmassofNaClmolarmassofNaCl=5g58.5gmol-1=0.086mol
  • no. of moles of H2O =givenmassofH2OmolarmassofH2O=25g18gmol-1=1.388mol
  • MoleFraction=no.ofmolesofNaClno.ofmolesofNaCl+no.ofmolesofH2OMoleFraction=0.086mol0.086mol+1.388molMoleFraction=0.058

Step 2: Finding the mole percentage of NaCl

  • MolepercentofNaCl=MolefractionofNaClx100.MolepercentofNaCl=0.058×100MolepercentofNaCl=5.8%

Hence mole percentage of NaCl is 5.8oo
